Thought you guys might find this interesting--I test drove a new Mini Cooper today. ANNNNND I drove a '00 VW GTI VR6. (to which I'm putting some serious thought into...) The mini was fun...it was cool looking and everything, but it didn't have a whole lot of power. (I mean, it did...but it was merely nothing in comparison to the VR6) It's basically the size of my VW, minus some room in the trunk. You could probably fit like, 5 basketballs back there. It's pretty roomy inside and the front console is awesome! It's all vintage-looking and HUGE--plus, they glow, so that's even better! We (we being myself and the salesman) couldn't figure out where the knob for the hood release was ::sigh:: oh well. NOW, the VR6, that's an entirely new paragraph altogether.
Ok, silver exterior/black leather interior. 30K mi. Fast as a mo-fo. That thing's got 174 hp...which is plenty pretty horsies for this little girl.$18k---choke!!! I'm thinking of spending tomorrow morning looking at some in the area--or at least a year or two older than the one that I saw today. I don't know. I know of someone who works at that dealership, but he's a mechanic. I also don't know how much I'd get taken off just by using him as a reference. Oh well. We'll see. Any ideas? Connections, etc?

Since I am the resident VW Expert....TRY ME.
GTI Vr6. With 174 horses... Very smooth acceleration over the 1.8, but honestly I would get a 1.8. For your price range, I would recommend lookin into it.
That price sucks....for 2k more you can get a 02 GTI with 0 miles. Think ABOUT it. And thats a 1.8 engine.

Alright. I found another car...it's not at a dealership. Actually, it's located in Waltham. It's a '98 GTI VR6 and he wants $12k for it. I'm putting some serious consideration into this car...so much, that I actually went to the bank today to find out if I could take out a loan. I put $50 on it to hold it for me and after talking to the owner today, it's basically my car. I'd be taking out a $10k loan and I'd end up paying $313/mo for the loan. Now, I'm thinking of buying the car and waiting a little while to register it. (I turn 21 in Sept. and in Nov. I renew my ins. policy) The rate will go down a lot, I hear...would it be worth it to wait? I need some opinions on this car 'cause I don't want to do the wrong thing. If I registered the car now and got the ins., it'd be fully covered and costing me around $400/mo. So, I'm thinking that buying it and holding it isn't a bad idea. (until Nov. or somewhere near it, that is) I can't figure out how to do a link on here, otherwise I'd post it. It's on autotrader.com and it's a '98 GTI VR6. (if anyone feels like looking for it for me) It's got oodles of trinkets, too and it's going for $12k. Well...any kind of input would be good. Please someone let me know. Other people's opinions are good.

Jeeze, my last insurance bill was $368. God, I hate being a young male driving a red sports car. I've had one ticket for 5MPH over the speed limit and a traffic court date in June for a ticket I received this winter. Is this the car you are looking at? And btw, if you ever need to link something just click the above the smilies.

Just be careful because modified cars can be trouble sometimes. Make sure he didn't hammer it. I wouldn't want to fix that motor. Also inquire why he is selling it

Alright. That was the car that I was looking at. I spent some time thinking about it today and I changed my mind. I put some pieces together and went with my gut feeling; this deal is shady. Why? Because he won't come down to RI to have my mechanic look at it. He's been pressuring me the past 2 days 'cause he says that the dealer is pressuring him about HIS car. He's relying on the sale of this car for his new one. No dice, man. I wish I had the money to piss something like that away in 3 days, but I don't. I think I'm gonna end up going with a dealer and haggling the price. I'll just have to put up with the high monthy ins. rate for a little while--no big deal. That's what summer and new jobs are for. I think if I go with a dealer, I'd have a warranty....even if it's used. I think the warranty over at Scott VW down here in RI is like, 2 years. (for a used car) I don't want to budge on the model of the car, though. VR6 all the way!!!!! If I'm gonna go to a dealer and get a car, I'm gonna have to go all out. And yeah, I did consider the fact that if the '98 has been tooled with, it may have some problems later down the road if they were done incorrectly OR it was driven hard. If I get a new car or almost new car from a dealer, I think I'd feel a little better. So yeah, that's the story of the moment. Oh, and btw, my insurance right now on my '92 Golf is $143. ::sniff sniff:: I'll miss that payment....

Just for future info: If you have a bank loan on a car the bank that loaned you the money will require you to have full insurance on that car from the time of delivery, No matter what... In other words you cant wait to register a financed car.

That VW sounds like a good deal. But maybe you should check out that Mini Cooper S! I know $3k is a lot to us, but it's a huge power difference over the base model. Those new Coopers are huge, ain't they? I mean, they're small cars, but they're nowhere near as small as the originals!

Just letting you know, that VW probably belongs to one of the guys at Eastside Perf., thats where the pic (Autotrader) looks like it was taken. Let's just say I went there and the best he could offer me was altezzas....I was like wow, he should have known I would have been more interested in tint.
